What is a Motor Vehicle Inspection, is it mandatory and what do I need to bring to my appointment?

In Nova Scotia, a Motor Vehicle Inspection (MVI) is a mandatory inspection required for most vehicles and trailers to ensure they meet safety and environmental standards every 2 years unless it is a brand new vehicle, then it is required 3 years, for the first time. The inspection is conducted by licensed technicians or mechanics at designated inspection stations.

The paperwork required for the technician to complete during the inspection typically includes:

Inspection Form: This form contains a checklist of items that the technician must inspect, including brakes, tires, lights, exhaust system, suspension, steering, and more. The technician will mark each item as pass or fail based on its condition.

Vehicle Information: The technician will record basic information about the vehicle being inspected, such as make, model, year, VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), odometer reading, and license plate number.

Test Results: The technician will record the results of each inspection item, noting any defects or issues found during the inspection.

Recommendations: If any repairs or maintenance are needed to bring the vehicle up to standard, the technician may provide recommendations or requirements for corrective action.

Technician Signature: The technician performing the inspection will sign and date the inspection form to certify that the inspection was completed according to the regulations.

Once the inspection is completed and the vehicle passes all requirements, the technician will issue an inspection certificate or sticker that must be displayed on the vehicle. If the vehicle fails the inspection, the owner will be informed of the reasons for failure and any necessary repairs or adjustments that need to be made before reinspection.

As a customer getting a Motor Vehicle Inspection (MVI) in Nova Scotia, you typically need to provide the following documents:

Vehicle Permit: You'll need to bring the vehicle's current permit documents. This proves that you are the legal owner of the vehicle and that it is eligible for inspection.

****The Vehicle Inspection Certificte should be in the vehicle a all times as it maybe required during a traffic stop*****

What is undercoating and do I need it?

Undercoating refers to a protective layer applied to the underside of vehicles, typically to protect against rust and corrosion caused by exposure to moisture, salt, and other road debris. The undercarriage of a vehicle is particularly vulnerable to damage from these elements, especially in regions where road salt is used during winter months.

Here are some key points about undercoating:

Protection against Rust: Undercoating forms a barrier between the metal components of the vehicle's undercarriage and environmental elements, reducing the risk of rust and corrosion.

Sound Dampening: Some undercoating materials also provide sound-deadening properties, reducing road noise and vibrations, which can contribute to a quieter and smoother ride.

Types of Undercoating: There are different types of undercoating products available. We use FLUID FILM® products that offer powerful corrosion protection for all metals and superior lubrication for all moving parts. They are long lasting, thixotropic liquids and gels that have been used for over 55 years in the highly corrosive marine environment of ships and offshore drilling rigs.

More recently they have been introduced and successfully utilized in the lawn & garden, aviation and automobile industries, as well as providing a non-hazardous/non-toxic solution for home maintenance. Facilities where they are used include government, commercial fishing, gas companies, farming, salt, power, and industrial plants.

Application: Undercoating is typically applied during the manufacturing process, but it can also be added later as an aftermarket treatment. The effectiveness of aftermarket undercoating may vary depending on the quality of the product and the skill of the installer.

Whether or not you need undercoating depends on several factors:

Climate: If you live in an area with harsh winters or coastal regions where salt is used on the roads, undercoating can be beneficial in protecting your vehicle from corrosion. DUE TO OUR LOCATION we are in a highley corrosive environment and application of undercoat is reccommened every year.

Vehicle Age: Older vehicles are more susceptible to rust and corrosion, so undercoating can help extend their lifespan and maintain their structural integrity.

Driving Habits: If you frequently drive on rough roads or off-road terrain, undercoating can provide additional protection against debris and abrasion.

Budget: Undercoating is an additional expense, so you'll need to consider whether the investment is worthwhile based on your budget and the value of your vehicle.

We offer Fluid Film Undercoating in the spring (once all risk of winter weather is gone) and in fall (prior to the winter weather arrival).

Price is based on vehicle size.

You can contact us at anytime to be added to the next seasons undercoating list.

Please note that we recommend getting added to our list ASAP to avoid dissapointment. Once product supply is depleted or the weather changes we will be done offering the service until the next season.

Do you have a loaner car I can use during my appointment?

What is tire storage?

Tire storage refers to the practice of storing tires when they are not in use, typically during seasons when they are not needed on a vehicle. Proper tire storage is essential for maintaining the integrity and performance of tires, as well as ensuring their longevity.
